MEDICAL INSTRUMENTS

A SET OF WOOD SILVER-PLATED LITHO-
TOMY PROBES, the eleven instruments of different sizes in fitted leather-covered case, English, c. 1880.
These instruments were either made by William Wood of Manchester or John Wood of Liverpool.

A SET OF THUMB LANCETS, the six small lancets with tortoiseshell guards in silver-mounted chagrin-covered case with hinged lid, probably English, late 18th century.

A SILVER-PLATED AURAL SPECULUM, lacking eye-piece, with flared trumpet and cylindrical tube, English, mid 19th century.

A    SINGLE-BLADED    SCARIFICATOR,    the
sprung blade in brass casing with release lever, in fitted leather case, English, c. 1780.

AN   ARNOLD   ARTICULATED   BONE   SAW,
with two turned ebony handles, English, c. 1870.

SET, the complete set of steel instruments contained in chromed metal
carrying case.

AN   ARNOLD   &   SONS   SILVERED   AURAL
SPECULUM with flared trumpet, eye-piece and tapering nozzle applied with Arnold trade plaque.

A COLLECTION OF MEDICAL INSTRU¬MENTS, including a leather-cased set of minor operation instruments, a cased anemometer, a syringe and chromed needle, a set of Stan forth steel scalpels, a tourniquet, and other steel instruments, English.

A SILVER LANCET SET, the four steel
blades in tortoiseshell guards contained
in silver case for rectangular section,
bright-cut with quatrefoils, with vacant
cartouche.

A SET OF WEISS OPHTHALMIC INSTRU-MENTS in fitted leather case, four other cases of Ophthalmic instruments, a Weiss iris knife, a dynamometer and an optician’s lens measure, English, c. 1920.

leather cases and by various manufacturers including Curry & Paxton, and

The Ceram’s laryngoscope allowed the subject, who held a long-handled mirror at the back of his throat, to see his own larynx while an observer viewed through a hole in the reflecting mirror. A similar instrument is illustrated in the Weiss catalogue of 1863.

brass carrying handle opening to
crushed velvet-lined and fitted interior
with eleven Compound bottles and two
lift-out trays containing mortar and
pestle, measuring flask, three small

with weights, the lid applied with
Savoury & Moore trade label, English.

AN    UNUSUAL    MEDICINE    CHEST,    the
mahogany case with hinged lid and recessed brass carrying handle, drop-front opening to fitted interior with thirteen Compound bottles applied with John Bell trade labels, a glass pallet, and two lift-out trays with glass mortar and pestle, two pill boxes, four small Compound bottles, knife, brass hanging balance with weights.

A MEDICINE CHEST, the mahogany case with lid and front flap opening to twelve glass Compound bottles, two silver-topped ointment jars, weights and three zinc containers, English, mid 19th century.

FIVE EARTHENWARE APOTHECARY’S JARS,
each of cylindrical form, one with domed lid, the remainder with tin lids, applied with compound labels, late 19th century.

A FINE AND RARE SILVER-MOUNTED MAHOGANY MEDICINE CHEST ON STAND,
the mahogany case with two silver
carrying handles, corner mounts and
escutcheon engraved with a Dawkins
and Colure coat-of-arms, hinged at the
centre and opening to eighteen small
drawers of powders and compounds,
two compartments hidden behind slid-
ing panels of simulated drawers housing
eleven medicine bottles (one missing),
and two drawers in the base similarly
concealed containing twelve glass
bottles, each with silver top engraved
with a banner and title of the com-
pound, also a glass mortar and pestle,
measuring flask and marble mixing
slab, the rear with two sliding panels
concealing ten large bottles of crystals,
powders and medicines,
ON LATER MAHOGANY
STAND, with two drawers in the front,
raised on turned and fluted legs ter-
minating in brass castors, English.
